Excellent Teaching News!

I have my teaching assignments for next semester.

I will be teaching the General Chemistry II Lab on Wednesdays from 6-10pm. Since this is a lab class it is VERY doubtful that the experiments will take the entire time. Also, because it is a lab I will only have to give a 30 minute lecture and the rest of the time be going around the classroom assisting students with their experiments. Preparation time for this class shouldn’t be more than an hour a week.

I will be teaching Chemistry 101 on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 8-10am. I was right that the chair would probably move the days of the class to fit my schedule, and he did. 8am is early for me. But since I’ll have to be up this early now three days a week (Mon, Wed and Fri) I suppose I’ll just have to suck it up and be up this early every damn day. Bummer. =(

All told I’ll be getting 8 contact hours a week – and thus be getting paid $4,560 for the semester. Which after taxes and all of that will be an extra $904 per month of income.

Because of the extra money I’ll be getting next semester I’ll have to figure out a way to rework the budget, and also keep in mind that during the summer I likely won’t have a class to teach. So I’ll also need to figure out a way to save some of that money for the summer when the extra cash will be lean but my credit card bill will be just as high! I’ll figure that out a little more in the coming weeks.

I’m definitely going to have to stop doing private tutoring next semester in order to have the free time to prepare the extra lectures per week. But I also won’t need the money from tutoring because of the extra class. In addition I may consider moving my “weekend” days to Wednesday and Sunday rather than Saturday and Sunday and just spend all day on campus on Wednesday – using that time to prepare for lectures.

However, since I won’t be going anywhere for Christmas I can probably get a lot of lecture prep done during the holiday so that I may not need as much prep time during the semester.

I’m Very, Very excited. I am so glad to be teaching classes that are within my area of expertise!

  1. Gen Chem was a horrible, horrible memory for me. The teachers were great, it’s just that I was more interested in other things at the time, so yeah, it never worked out. That being said, I love hearing about other people enjoying Chem.

  2. You are such an inspiration with your second job! Now I’m thinking maybe it won’t be so hard to do the same once I graduate! 🙂
